First, the company released a digital car key application called "Modern Digital Key" in the Play Store. The application will allow car owners to control their cars with Android smartphones and share virtual car keys with up to four users, but only the upcoming 2020 Hyundai Sonata sedan is supported at present.
In order to use modern digital keys to control 2020 Sonata, you need an Android smartphone that supports both Bluetooth low power consumption (BLE) and NFC. Using the application program on the mobile phone, the owner can lock and unlock the vehicle through NFC simply by placing the mobile phone in front of the driver’s side door handle. After putting it in the mobile phone, you can put the phone above the wireless charging board of the central console to start the engine, which is also driven by NFC. When standing within a radius of 30 meters, BLE function is used to lock and unlock the vehicle, pop the trunk, activate the emergency alarm and start the engine.
Owners can create and share virtual car keys with up to four other drivers. Different levels of car functions can be customized for each user, such as vehicle functions (for example, opening the trunk), driving time and geofence alarm (when used with the Blue Link application). The application is also smart enough to save each driver’s customized preferences, such as seat position, rearview mirror position, radio preset and audio settings. Owners can naturally revoke these virtual keys at any time. Although all these functions are good and useful, the application can definitely use a more attractive layout and design. I hope that Hyundai Motor can be improved to reach the level of Tesla.
2020 Hyundai Sonata drivers do not need to use the Digital Key application. The car will be equipped with a physical key and NFC card, which is very useful when using valet parking service. In terms of security, Hyundai Motor cooperates with Trustonic Application Protection (TAP) to protect cars and applications with "multi-layer" security.
